1. IRELAND

The world’s longest coastal route, Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way runs 2,500km up the Western Coast through nine counties and packs a heavy punch in a relatively-short distance.

Take a few weeks to experience the best of what the Emerald Isle has to offer when it comes to history, natural wonders and cultural experiences, including the Cliffs of Moher, Skellig Michael, Mizen Head, Poulnabrone dolmen, Slea Head Drive, and Aran Islands.

Hike and surf to your heart’s content, sampling the catches of the seas and local brews at neighbourhood pubs along the way.

2. NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand crams a symphony of drama into a small geographical area. It’s easily explorable by motorhome or camper van, with free camping anywhere off the public highway that’s at least 15km from nearby large towns.

Take on the southern island for at least a week, starting at Queenstown. At every turn, you’ll be confronted with beaches, mountain peaks, fiords and glacier fields. Highlights include Milford Sound, Abel Tasman National Park, Lake Tekapo, Kaikoura, and the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks.

Drive your way across the Southern Island

3. AUSTRALIA

Not only is a motorhome road trip through Australia the only true way to experience remote locales like the Outback, there are plenty of scenic coastal roads along the way. Auz is all about open roads, engulfing skies and an intriguing mix of reef and rainforest.

The best drives are Adelaide to Melbourne – which includes the Great Ocean Road, one of the best coastal landscapes in the world – along with Fraser Island.

If you opt to drive Adelaide to Darwin instead, take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Uluru, the sacred red rock at the cultural heart of Australia’s indigenous peoples. While you might not see much on long stretches of Outback road, the chance to get away from urban life and see the stars can be reason enough to take the road less travelled.

No matter where you go, there are plenty of national parks and camp grounds dotting the country for overnight stays.

4. SPAIN

With so much to see and experience in Spain, deciding what to do on your next road trip can be daunting. Auto Europe’s top picks for a road trip by motorhome include a visit to seven of the country’s Unesco World Heritage sites.

Start in Madrid and head to the world’s first university city of Alcala de Henares, a centre for language and learning. From there, visit the mountaintop town of Cuenca, where ancient architecture hangs seamlessly from natural cliffside landscapes. Then, move on to the “Museum City” of Toledo and Cordoba, a city known for its 300 mosques.

Finish the roadtrip in Seville, home to three Unesco sites: the sprawling Alcazar compound, the tomb of Christopher Columbus, and the Archivo de Indias that houses the record of Spain’s explorations in the Americas.

Sample tapas, watch – or dance – flamenco and savour the Spanish countryside at your own pace; a motorhome is one of the best ways to explore.
